The Challenge Faced
Transitioning from high school to university can and will be for many students the most challenging experience they have faced in their lives. Getting accepted into university or college, securing a student loan and maintaining good grades are just the beginning when it comes to challenges for young students. For most, the challenges go far beyond academics and finances. Most students aren’t ready for the social and emotional demands of their first year.
The biggest changes for young kids entering university are:
- Personal Responsibility – students are in a new experience of being accountable and responsible for themselves
- Independence – students must balance course workload, social life and day to day living demands on their own.
- Time Management – students must create their own schedule and spend their time effectively in a way they are not used to.
- Social Demands – students will need to recreate their social world and feel social pressure to make new friends.
And for kids who are not emotionally prepared, transitions can be danger points because of the stress experienced with it. Students often struggle to get emotional support when they need it and often experience mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Some turn to drug and alcohol or high-risk behaviour for relief. The overall result is poor academic performance, regardless of how intellectually smart they are.
As a parent we can often feel overwhelmed when we consider the challenges our young students will be facing during this time. So how can you support your child as they transition into independence?

I provide the tools to equip your child to be effective as they navigate the critical transition to post secondary education. I give them perspective on how their emotions have a role to play in their own self worth, their self expression, their relationships, the way they handle stress and how they make decisions. I work closely with students through a combination of an assessment and coaching to help them develop their emotional intelligence skills. The focus: helping students build emotional resilience for their next stage.

I have had two consultations with Dagmar at Courage Space since doing the EQ-i test. In both of these consultations Dagmar went through my strengths as well as areas needing improvement based on the EQ-i test. How Does It Work?
In the Youth Transition Program, students receive:
- EQ-i 2.0 Higher Education Online assessment
- EQ-i 2.0 Higher Education Comprehensive Report – sample report
- One-on-one skill development coaching
- Valuable resources and encouragement for continued learning
The EQ-i 2.0 Higher Education assessment provides a map of a student’s emotional operating system by looking at emotional intelligence skills. And one-on-one coaching provides an opportunity for students to explore more deeply specific areas they may be struggling in and produce some effective and positive results including breakthroughs, strategies and sometimes life changing ‘aha’ moments.
Dagmar creates a confidential and safe space for students to be vulnerable and to explore themselves, if they wish, at a deeper level. She then empowers students to move beyond their obstacles and to use them as a springboard to create the future they want.
Students may then decide to do further coaching. It’s recommended to do at least three follow-up coaching sessions after the assessment to give time and space for students to experience real change and shifts in perspective.

Once a student decides to participate in the Youth Transition Program, I begin the process of connecting with the student and parents and scheduling the assessment and debrief coaching session(s). If students or parents have any specific questions, they can contact me directly, I’m quite open to meeting over coffee to talk more about the program in person.
